Prof. Humayun Rashid

 Ecosystem, NBS and Geospatial Expert

Prof. Humayun, an Almunus of Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, a Geospatial Scientist and winner of National e-Governance Award-2013 for developing a DSS for facilitating equitable access to healthcare network in Jammu & Kashmir, has served the Department of Ecology, Environment & Remote Sensing  (DEERS) J&K Government for over 36 years and from where he superannuated as Scientist during June, 2024 and is associated with the Islamic University of Science and Technology as Professor of Practice since October, 2024.

During his service at DEERS, he accomplished a large number of national projects sponsored by NRSA, SAC-Ahmadabad, MoEF&CC and DST besides projects funded by Jammu & Kashmir Government. He has to his credit, a number of scientific publications in leading national and international journals, besides a large number of departmental publications.

He provided technical support and coordinated with District Magistrates of J&K for formulating/updating District Environment Plans and brief documents for wetlands. He has a good understanding of restoring wetlands using Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and has monitored world famous Dal Lake of Kashmir, geo-spatially from 2007- 2020.

He is also known for his contribution in successfully developing  the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SSDI) sponsored by DST in J&K with user interface of J&KGeoportal-JKRIS. The portal provides access to more than 70 geospatial data layers for use in geospatial planning by user departments.

Prof. Humayun is also the Member of J&K Level Expert Appraisal Committee of J&K, UT Level Environmental Impact Assessment Authority, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Govt. of India mandated to appraise developmental projects for grant of Environmental Clearance in J&K. Before superannuation, he was the Member Secretary of the forum for over 8 years.

At IUST, he initiated the Integrated Eco-development Planning of Wasturwan hillock of the campus and carried out massive plantation drives and soil & water conservation works with active collaboration of concerned line departments of the J&K Government. He is also the Core Member of the Working Group on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) at IUST.

Born on 27th of June 1964, Humayun Rashid has studied at College of Forestry, Ranchi where he graduated with specialization in land-use planning. He has also completed his PGD in Remote Sensing from Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), ISRO, Dehradun with Distinction and holds an M. Tech. in Remote Sensing & GIS from Andhra University and Masters in Environmental Science.
